Sixteen

For the first time that evening, Ben looked rattled. He ducked as Jason took a swing at him and missed. It was Rick Metz of all people who jumped forward to restrain Jason. Jason’s face was bright red as he strained against Rick’s wiry grip. Detective Wilson knocked a chair over as she raced to the front of the room. Dorothy’s cries of alarm added to the din.

It was pandemonium.

Callie stood up, unsure of what to do. The place was in chaos, voices raising, chairs scraping back, people jeering at Ben and others shouting at Jason. There seemed to be a few mall supporters among the opponents, Callie noted distractedly.

Dorothy stood up next to Callie, her mouth agape. Sam reached over and grabbed Callie’s arm. “Let’s get out of here,” she said through gritted teeth.

“But Jason, I can’t, I mean…” Callie stammered.

Sam shook her head. “Nothing you can do here. Let’s go.”

Dorothy nodded mutely at them, and Callie had no choice but to agree. Pushing through the crowd, Sam led the three of them out of the close, hot room and into the cool evening, where they stood catching their breath.

For a minute, none of them spoke. “That went well,” Dorothy said with deep irony, her voice small and tired sounding. “I’m glad we got out of there.”

Sounds of yelling penetrated the quiet outside and Callie flinched as two police officers ran up the steps. The police station was right next to the Crystal Bay city hall, so they didn’t have far to go.

“No use staying in there,” Sam said, sighing gustily as she watched the police scramble into the building. “Somebody could get hurt and frankly, Callie, you’ve had enough bad publicity.”

“Thanks a lot,” Callie said. “Did any of you know Rick Metz’s brother sold the property to the development company?”

Her two companions shook their heads.

“If I were Rick, I’d be furious,” Callie remarked. “How sad that he has such a strained family relationship.” Fleetingly, she thought of George and his early opposition to her opening Callie’s Kitchen. He’d wanted her to take over his diner one day and she had other plans. Eventually, though, he’d come around and become one of her biggest supporters. She felt fresh love for George after the scene she’d just witnessed and promised to take that into account the next time he did something to irritate her.

“That is odd about Rick,” Sam said slowly. “What kind of brother would do that? There must be some seriously bad blood between them.”

“Why would the killer go after Henry, then?” Callie cried. “Why not go after Rick’s brother? Or Ben Lucas, the leader of the whole thing? None of it makes sense. There’s something we’re missing.”

Callie glanced over at Dorothy, wanting her opinion, but Dorothy was ashen, her thin body trembling. Tears squeezed out of the corner of her eyes. “Forgive me,” she said, raking her hands through her short brown hair. “This…violence…wasn’t what I was expecting tonight. I just want to go home.”

“You bet,” Callie said, putting her arm around her.
